The white cube is often the choice for artists to display their works and in Guyana it is almost exclusively chosen to display two dimensional works of art. Gallery spaces are plastered with pristinely white walls with photographs or paintings being appropriately placed in order to bestow significance and to be elevated from craft into art. The VISIONS exhibition purposely breaks this mould by creating a three dimensional experience which allows the viewer to traverse through the carefully positioned photographs in order to unravel the overall story being told. The viewer is asked to literally walk around the exhibition and notice the subtle shifts in each artist’s work. These shifts are informed by formal connections; those of colour, shapes and similar elements, and as they approaches the end of the story, the viewer may be compelled to navigate the exhibition again as more connections will be made.
The exhibition references the space it is housed in and uses the unique characteristics of this aged colonial structure turned office space in order to naturally light the selected photographs. The large, almost wall-sized windows which line both eastern and western walls allow for natural light the permeate the space and ensure a well lit environment.
The vision for VISIONS is the viewer having a phenomenological experience; that is one of a returned consciousness. The viewer should see these snippets, the brief moments captured by the photographers, and feel a connection that brings them back to their everyday life and the details of that everyday life which may get lost or ignored in the chaos. The photographs selected were chosen to mimic the Guyanese culture and act as a microcosm of Guyanese life; that of separation through backgrounds and individuality but also united through common struggles and lifestyles.
VISIONS Exhibition 2016 comprises of 42 photographs by 17 artists whose subjects included portrait, street, landscape, aerial wildlife, cultural festivities and nudes.
